Diaspora
is a social
network created
by people like
you.
In 2010, a few
young
programmers from
NYU’s Courant
Institute
announced to the
world that they
wanted to create
a new, safer,
more
privacy-aware
social network.
They said they
would need
$10,000 to
accomplish the
task and
instead, 6,479
people like you
pledged
$200,641. Since
then, the young
programmers
along with many
volunteers from
around the world
have been
working to
create the next
generation of
Social Networks
to allow you to
socialize on the
internet more
safely.

Diaspora is a
software that
can be installed
on a server by
someone that has
the knowledge to
do so. They in
turn can allow
people to
register for an
account on what
they call their
"pod". There
are many of
these pods
already
established
across the
internet with
many users. You
register for a
free account on
a pod and you
can seamlessly
connect with
other users on
other pods the
same as if you
were making
someone a friend
on other social
networking
sites. No
matter which pod
you are on, you
are all using
Diaspora. If
you have the
technical
skills, you can
even set up your
own pod for your
family and or
friends. They
can in turn
connect to
family and
friends on your
pod or even
other pods with
ease. Amazing,
isn't it?
The image below
shows how your
Diaspora account
can seamlessly
interact with
other Diaspora
accounts on
other pods.
When connecting
to accounts on
different pods,
you won't even
realize that
your accounts
are not on the
same server.
Diaspora is just
that smooth.

You are probably already well established on your current social networking site, with many friends and contacts, so when you first log into Diaspora* you may feel that not much is happening. But once your friends start to join you on Diaspora*, they’ll be posting updates and your stream will start to come to life.
Invite your friends to join Diaspora* by clicking the link on the right side of the page. If they don't yet know what Diaspora* is, suggest they look at this site or
DiasporaFoundation.org. You add your friends into groups called "aspects" such as family, work, sports team, or whatever aspects you want to create. When friends you’ve invited join, they will be automatically connected to your account, in whichever aspect or aspects you added them. You can then share information, photos and more just like on the other social networking sites, but, unlike on other social networks, you won't see advertisements and your data will not be harvested to be sold or shared.
